From the everyday to the extraordinary, our collections tell the story of Stockholm. We preserve and display thousands of artefacts, photographs, artworks, and archival documents.
The City Museum in Stockholm is one of Sweden’s largest municipal museums with a collection of over 300,000 items, 25,000 works of art, 4 million photographs, and an extensive library and archive. The museum’s collections include artefacts, photos, artwork and archival material which are collected, preserved and displayed in various ways. The collections are stored in depositories located in Frihamnen.

Artefacts
Archaeological finds form the largest part of our collection. These items have been recovered from city excavations since the 1930s. The finds date from prehistoric times up to 1850.
The architectural history collection contains building fragments from demolished or renovated properties dating back to the late 19th century. Items include tiled stoves, wood panelling, wallpapers, ceilings, doors, windows, and stone masonry.
The urban history collection reflects everyday life across Stockholm. It features objects from the police and fire services, local factories, traditional trades, private homes, and cafés.

Art
The City Museum's art collection includes around 35,000 works. This features 1,400 oil paintings alongside watercolours, prints, and drawings.
Dating from the 16th to the 19th century, these pieces depict Stockholm’s landscape, daily life, and people. The collection brings the past to life through street scenes, city views, portraits, and caricatures.

Archives
The archives document the City Museum's ongoing work and activities. Our records include exhibition files, building inventories, archaeological reports, and official planning responses for building permits and heritage conservation.
The collection also features historical material on theatre and entertainment, along with maps, architectural drawings, and personal archives. Together, these documents trace the growth and development of Stockholm.
Library
The library in Frihamnen holds around 50,000 volumes. It focuses primarily on Stockholm literature, ranging from major reference books to university essays and brochures. The library features an extensive collection on architectural history and building design.
Visitors are very welcome, but you must book an appointment in advance. We do not offer home loans; all literature must be studied on-site.
